I plan to post a list of what equipment I use here which I’ll update a little at a time. I have no monetary interest in anything listed, it’s just that people find this sort of thing interesting. On a personal note – I like certain things, other people like other things. If your instruments and tools work for you, that’s what’s important. I’ve found that new equipment may help a problem for a little while. However a new mouthpiece or barrel or whatever is never a substitute for practice and hard work.
Clarinets
I have a pair of Buffet R-13 Prestige clarinets that I love. They aren’t matching instruments but I don’t really care about that it’s just that they play well and have always been dependable. My own little thing – the left hand Eb key is great. I honestly wish more clarinets came with this. It takes a little getting used to, but then it can be a real life saver. If somebody would combine that with an articulated G# key I’d be really excited (by the way, I’m a big dork sometimes). I also have a Buffet low C bass clarinet. Also a brilliant instrument. I like that it feels solid in the hands but responds like my soprano clarinets.
Mouthpieces
For clarinet I use a mouthpiece made by Brad Behn. I like this mouthpiece a lot because I feel that it gives me a wide range of tonal possibilities yet always lets me come back to a beautifully focused sound. For bass clarinet I have a Hite mouthpiece that works nicely. It projects really well and is very reliable in terms of intonation.
